What is data logging?

A data logger collects readings from one or more sensors. Instead of pupils repeatedly checking an instrument and writing down each result, the logger can capture measurements automatically.

This allows children to spend more time observing what is happening, asking questions and thinking about what their results mean.

Depending on the activity, readings can be displayed as numbers, meters, tables, pictograms, bars or graphs. This makes data logging accessible to pupils at different stages of primary education.

The Vu Pro primary data logger has been designed specifically for primary science. Its larger graphical display, straightforward controls and page-based menu help children start collecting data without having to navigate a complicated scientific instrument.

Vu Pro can record, display and store data without being connected to a computer. This makes it suitable for practical work around the classroom, in the playground or during fieldwork.

Four built-in sensors ready to use

Vu Pro includes four built-in sensors, so children can begin investigating straight out of the box:

  • Temperature: compare warm and cool locations, investigate cooling or observe temperature changes over time.
  • Light: explore shadows, compare light levels and investigate how light changes with distance.
  • Sound: compare sound levels around the school or investigate how distance and different materials affect sound.
  • Heart rate: observe how heart rate changes before and after different types of physical activity.

Having the sensors built into the logger reduces setup time and makes it easier to take science beyond the classroom. Pupils can carry Vu Pro to different locations, capture readings and compare what they find.

Different ways to collect and display data

Not every investigation needs the same type of data. Vu Pro provides several modes to help teachers match the recording method to the question being explored.

  • Meters: displays live sensor readings as they happen.
  • Pictograms: presents results using accessible icons, blocks and bars.
  • Snapshot: captures individual readings for comparing objects, places or conditions.
  • Timing: measures time or speed between two points.
  • Stopwatch: supports simple timing activities, including sports investigations.
  • Counting: introduces data collection through practical numeracy activities.

Choosing the right display is part of working scientifically. Younger pupils might begin by comparing numbers, pictures or bars, while older pupils can use tables and line graphs to identify trends.

Adding more sensors and activities

Many changes in science are difficult to follow through observation alone. A temperature may fall slowly, light levels may change throughout the day, or a short event may happen too quickly for pupils to record accurately by hand.

A data logger captures these changes and turns them into visible evidence. Children can look at a graph and discuss where a value increased, decreased or stayed the same. They can identify the highest and lowest readings, compare different runs and look for results that do not fit the expected pattern.

Science, maths and literacy working together

Data logging naturally connects primary science with other areas of learning.

In maths, pupils can read scales, compare values, calculate differences and interpret tables, pictograms and graphs. In literacy, they can develop questions, describe observations, explain patterns and write evidence-based conclusions.

These are transferable skills that help children communicate clearly and make decisions based on evidence.
